As a location independent girl who likes her soya lattes I’m constantly looking for the perfect cosy cafe to hole up in and squeeze in an hours’ work on my laptop (ok, and hang out on Facebook and Twitter).
In some destinations this is easy and you can’t swing a cat without hitting five cool cafes serving soya. In other places you can pound the streets for days looking for a half-decent place to hang your hat and contemplate your home screen.
So I’m happy to report the winner of the title of location indy spiritual home – as well as that of dream deli – in Whistler goes, hands down, to Cafe Fix.
Here’s why…
What Does This Post Cover?
1. They have the best pecan tarts ever. They call them butter tarts, but whatever you call them, they taste amazing
Canadians are always playing around with the names of foods, (see also biscuits vs scones) but apparently this isn’t a pecan tart, it’s a butter tart with pecans. I would explain the exact difference but you have access to Google and Wikipedia, so you can probably do the maths. Or the math as they say here.
Officially the most delicious thing I have ever tasted in my entire life. I really mean that.
2. There’s a free shuttle service to collect you from town and return you after you’ve stuffed your face
Basically they take you where you want to go in a nice warm car, feed you, and then take you home again. They’re like your mum, only they won’t nag you about doing the dishes. What is not to like about this arrangement?
3. The cafe is in an art hotel, so we creative types can feel right at home here

The hotel hosts art exhibitions and supports the local creative community – the lobby area has some striking objects d’art and there are original paintings lining the halls so as a fellow freelancer you’re showing some solidarity by frequenting this establishment.
4. They do puns on their menu. Once puns are involved, I’m sold

5. They sell tasty treats for your dog. Awwww…
Fix’s style of food reminds me of London’s Outsider Tart, who also do a cute sideline in doggie biccies.
6. If you get tired, you can always check into one of the stylish suites and take a nap
Admittedly this is an upscale property so work would have to have gone really jolly well that day for this to actually happen, but the hotel has a beautiful lakeside setting and 77 chic minimalist rooms which are all about stripped wood and natural materials, so if you like the style of the cafe, you’ll probably love the bedrooms.

Fix Cafe at Nita Lake Lodge is open daily from 7 am until 6pm.
Everything edible is made on site, from soups and salads to sandwiches, pastries and ice creams – they even grow their own herbs – and there are plenty of gluten-free options.
This is one of the few independent cafes I’ve found in BC that offers a loyalty card: your sixth Parallel 49 coffee or other hot drink is on the house.
Yes, they have free wi-fi.
