The Perfect Place To Stay in Maspalomas, Gran Canaria – The Palm Beach
Written by Jaillan Yehia
Looking for a 5 star resort hotel with real design flair to set it apart from the droves of other properties lined up along the same stretch of beach? The Seaside Palm Beach Hotel at Gran Canaria’s Maspalomas has all the facilities you’d expect from an upmarket resort property, with a dash of South Beach cool thrown in.
So if you’re after the best place to stay in Maspalomas and want a stylish hotel with the atmosphere of a fully-functioning holiday resort on the Canaries’ own ‘miniature continent’, then you’ve come to the right place.
Most visitors come to Gran Canaria to wind down, relax, soak up the sun and be pampered by day, while hitting restaurants and bars by night, so the old adage of ‘you’re never in the room anyway’ which might prove true on a city-break or business trip just doesn’t stand up on a beach holiday. If you’re choosing to go half board or all inclusive, you’re likely to spend virtually all your time within the hotel complex and the standard of your accommodation really will make or break your trip.
There are an unlimited number of hotels competing for business at beach resorts all over the Canaries and most have the same list of features and facilities – the usual line up of swimming pools, tennis courts, buffet breakfasts and maid service. But it’s the crucial attention to seemingly small details at a resort that determines whether your holiday lives up to expectations: when you’re spending your day doing very little, a few minutes’ discomfort, hunger, thirst or hassle of any kind can put a serious kink in your perfect day.
Happily at the Seaside Palm Beach the German-staffed management team are adept at keeping their clientele relaxed and happy. The tiny gripes that often crop up with large resort hotels are conspicuously missing here: pool towels large and small are ready and waiting for you on the bed on arrival, and you’re welcome to take them to the beach too, so no faffing around working out towel etiquette on your first day.
Complimentary water is provided daily so you don’t have to splash out on mini bar beverages unless you choose to. There’s a quiet swimming pool (one of 4 pools, including a hot pool, a children’s pool and the main pool around which the gardens are set) for adults to enjoy a child-free environment, and a member of staff passes between sun loungers subtly poised to act in case of hunger or thirst from any of the families or couples of varying ages and nationalities who are reading or snoozing beneath the palm trees.
Food and drink is perhaps the most crucial element of your stay at a resort like this one – and here there are no disappointments. The breakfast buffet includes everything you could possibly want to set you up for the day from waffles and eggs cooked to order to healthy options like soya milk, yoghurt, pumpkin and linseed to add to your cereal. Come evening the buffet has been replenished with a thorough salad buffet, Canarian cheeses and a colourful dessert selection always on offer; the aroma of a barbecue greeting you on alternate nights with an a la carte menu on others.
The hotel is positioned a moment’s walk from the main beach, and 800 metres away from the nudist area, though if you are seeking an all over tan you can also use the spa’s discreet and secluded sunbathing area where costumes are quietly optional. The spa itself is a key part of the hotel, not an afterthought. Voted one of the Top 25 spas in Spain by Conde Nast Traveller last year, guests can use the sauna, sanarium (a slightly less hot and more humid version of a sauna), icy-plunge-pool and hot-stone-powered steam room freely and can book in for a treatment 7 days a week, including the signature Pantai Luar east-Asian massage with medicinal herbs.
The Palm Beach is consistently highly-rated on Tripadvisor and it’s easy to see why – totally refurbished in 2002 and partially renovated again last year, it is one of the only hotels recommended by Design Hotels in the Canaries, while sister hotel the Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia a few minutes’ walk away is the Number 1 hotel in Maspalomas, and Gran Canaria’s only hotel to be part of the Leading Hotels of The World group. The team behind it know their stuff, and it shows.
High Points
The attention to detail and standards of cleanliness and organisation just can’t be faulted
The spa is a real delight to spend time in, and combined with the healthy options available in the buffet, you could easily come here for a detox, to lose weight or get fit – provided you can resist the desserts!
The hotel overlooks the sand dunes of Maspalomas and is easy walking distance from the Meloneras promenade which has an upmarket selection of restaurants, bars and shops which make a pleasant diversion come evening
Low Points
If you want to explore more than just the area directly outside the hotel you’ll need your own wheels as there aren’t any organised excursions on offer through the hotel itself to help you experience Gran Canaria’s unique natural and cultural side.
Due to the proximity to the sand dunes, which are a protected nature reserve, you do have to circumnavigate the reserve to reach the centre of Maspalomas or Playa Del Ingles, the area’s big resorts
If you’re looking for a resort dominated by other English guests or with a younger, livelier crowd come sundown this isn’t for you. There is a real mix of European nationalities and age ranges but the vibe is one of relaxation not hedonism
